Have you Tried these Holiday Essential Oil? | Christmas Oil Guide

It’s Christmas time! Anyone else excited?? Christmas is my favorite season. I love everything about the season. Christmas music, movies, decorations, baking, buying gifts for people... and, of course, my essential oils! I pull out certain oils for this time of year that make my home feel festive, inviting and comforting. Read along for the perfect essential oils you can use during this Christmas season! Plus you might learn some interesting facts about these holiday oils you didn't know!

My favorite Holiday Oils

Here are some of my favorite oils to use during the holidays. Not only do they smell amazing but some of these oils have amazing immune-supporting abilities.

Cinnamon & Clove.

These essential oils are the perfect pair. Both have that sweet and spicy smell that shouts holiday. It makes the house warm and inviting.

Cinnamon triggers sensory memory. It's the perfect oil during the holidays that will take you back to baking cookies with grandma.

Clove is a classic holiday spice. Clove compliments cinnamon perfectly with its sweet, spicy, woody smell. It adds depth to any space, welcoming friends and family with a “hug.” Clove also helps ease respiratory and sinus issues, both common during this time of year.

When you pair clove with the antibacterial properties in cinnamon, you get a wonderful blend for the holidays. These are the ideal oils to diffuse during cold and flu season.

Pine and Cedarwood.

All of these are great Christmas essential oils. Pine not only makes your house smell like a Christmas tree, It also boosts the metabolism. I think we can all agree that is an excellent benefit with all of the yummy holiday food we might be eating this time of year.

Cedarwood has a woody, herbal scent that isn’t overpowering and pairs nicely with pine or spruce. Cedarwood also boosts the metabolism, soothes cough, and is a great detoxer. I love oils that increase metabolism. These are perfect oils for winter months when we may not be as active, and we might be eating a little more too.

Frankincense & myrrh.

Are these not THE iconic Christmas oils?? These were two of the gifts the wise men brought to Jesus. At the time of Jesus, frankincense was more valuable than gold. This was a costly gift the wise men brought Jesus. Frankincense has a piney and earthy smell along with a little spice and citrus. Frankincense is one of my favorite oils and it is a great antidepressant. One more benefit: Frankincense is one of the most powerful oils for inflammation!

Myrrh has a smoky, spicy, woody smell. Myrrhis is an immune booster, powerful antioxidant and helps relieve anxiety. During the winter months, we need some extra support since we cannot get as much vitamin D. These oils will support the immune system and make your house warm and inviting.

Orange and lavender.

I bet you were waiting for orange to pop up on this list of Christmas oils. But you weren’t expecting lavender, were you? Lavender may seem like an odd choice for a holiday oil because of its floral scents. However, lavender is one of the most relaxing, calming essential oils. Add a few drops to your diffuser and let the stress of the day melt away. Lavender has a pleasant floral, herbal, and sometimes fruity scent. It makes a perfect companion to orange and the other woodsy scented oils mentioned earlier.

Oranges have always reminded me of Christmas because my mom would make cranberry orange bread. Orange is an uplifting oil that helps with anxiety and focus. It also pairs so perfectly with the sweetness and spiciness of cinnamon and clove.

Peppermint and wintergreen.

Peppermint and wintergreen are some of the most delicious flavors of the season. Both of these oils will turn your house into a winter wonderland. Add a drop to your hot cocoa, and you instantly have a peppermint hot chocolate! Yum!! Peppermint reduces fever, helps with nausea and is excellent for energy; yet, is also surprisingly calming and promotes relaxation.

Wintergreen goes well with any of your citrus oils and spicy smelling oils like cinnamon. Wintergreen is fantastic for muscle aches. You might want to remember that when you hit the gym in January after those new year's resolutions.

Benefits of using essential oils

There are many health benefits to using essential oils. During the holidays, they are the perfect swap for traditional Christmas candles. Candles can have some harmful chemicals in the wax and fragrances they use to scent the candle. You won’t have to worry about that when using essential oils. And so many diffusers come with a feature that “twinkles” like a candle would. It’s a win-win.

Different ways to use essential oils this holiday season

Diffuser

There are a few different ways you can use essential oils (EO). I would say the most well-known method is using a diffuser. Diffusing oils is a method of dispersing aromatic molecules, or droplets, into the air, which puts the oils in the room for you to breathe. Diffusing is easy and cost-effective. You can add a few drops to your diffuser that will run for several hours instead of putting a drop or two on your palm that will only last for about fifteen minutes. Here is one of the diffusers I love!

Room spray

A room spray is an excellent option to get your house to smell like the holidays because they are easy to make and you can bring them with you. Here are some basic tips when making EO room spray:

  • You will want to use a glass bottle.

  • For a 2 oz. bottle, add 5-10 drops of your essential oil and top off with purified water. Give it a gentle shake and spray away. Yes, it is that simple.

  • If you’re using only one oil: put 3-5 drops.

  • For more potent oils like peppermint or wintergreen, use fewer drops.

  • For more subtle oils like lavender, use more drops.

  • If you are making a blend, try to use equal amounts.

Room sprays are great to put in the bathroom, have in your car, or even by your bed to spray your pillow for a restful night's sleep. Here are some of my favorite holiday room sprays:

  • For the living room: 3 drops cinnamon, 3 drops pine

  • For the bathroom: 2 drops wintergreen, 2 drops orange, 1 drop clove

  • For the bedroom: 5 drops lavender, 2 drops orange

Using essential oils is a great way to get in the Christmas spirit and make your home more festive. It will be the perfect addition when you are sitting by the fire with a book and that hot cocoa I mentioned earlier or gathering around the Christmas tree with your family.

However you use these oils, remember what we are celebrating: the birth of our Saviour, the Prince of Peace.
